The YouTube Singer also shot certain segments of the film in Mumbai. Many Big Artist has a cameo in that.
Shirley Setia is a YouTube star who hopes to use her social media success to become a movie star. Back in July 2013, when she first did an “Ask Me Anything” on YouTube, someone asked if Bollywood had contacted her. Shirley, who lived in Auckland and was known for singing Hindi film songs, replied sadly that they hadn’t. She also doubted her own talent.
Fast forward to today, and Shirley, now 24, has used her social media popularity to land her first Bollywood role in the upcoming movie Nikamma, alongside Abhimanyu Dassani. She’ll also appear in a web series with Manisha Koirala.
Shirley’s journey began six years ago when she randomly decided to upload a video of herself singing “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2. She filmed it in her bedroom at 1:30 a.m., wearing her pajamas. A friend encouraged her to post it online, and after two weeks, it went viral, getting over three million views. The New Zealand Herald even called her the “Pyjama Popstar.” Shirley admits that if she had known the video would become so popular, she would have filmed it differently.
Over time, her videos have become more polished, with better settings and even storylines. However, like her favorite YouTuber, Lilly Singh (Superwoman), she has kept all her old videos online, even the ones with poor production quality. She sees them as part of her journey and isn’t embarrassed by them.
Growing up in Auckland in a family that loved Bollywood, Shirley was a big fan of Kishore Kumar and RD Burman. However, she never thought of singing as a career. In 2015, when she told her father about her plans to sing professionally, he thought she was crazy because she had no formal training. Shirley felt insecure, especially when she compared herself to contestants on TV shows like Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, who she believed had real musical talent. She didn’t even know basic music terms like ‘taal,’ ‘chords,’ or ‘octaves.’
When Shirley started posting videos online, she received both praise and criticism. Some people said she couldn’t sing, used Auto-Tune, or didn’t deserve to be popular since she didn’t live in India. Despite the negativity, Shirley went on to perform live on tours with Armaan Malik in the US and UK and even shared the stage with Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna in Hong Kong. By the time she became a playback singer for the movie A Gentleman, she had already gained a lot of experience and recognition.
However, breaking into acting wasn’t easy for Shirley. She faced many rejections, including for a role in Student of the Year 2, which led her to focus on improving her acting skills. She took two months off to study acting in New York. Now, she is more aware of her surroundings when on camera but admits that the hardest part is hiding her fatigue during long shoots.
Although she has a huge following on social media eagerly waiting for her movie debut, Shirley remains humble. She says she hasn’t “arrived” yet and feels that true success will come when people genuinely appreciate her work, which is what she has always aimed for.
